Heading
down towards Presidio, on the border with Mexico is route 170. This road
parallels the Rio Grande. The mountains in Mexico can be seen in the distance.
At a town called Redford, I met Eveleena, the daughter of a long time
ranching family. She's rebuilding the family's ranch home and planting
trees.
On
May 20, 1997,
Marine snipers, allegedly thinking he was a 'drug smugler', killed 18
year old shepherd boy, Ezekiel
Hernandez, in what has become a bitter episode in border tensions.
The un-tried killing still has residents deeply upset. Current plans to
erect a border fence along portions of the Rio Grande is opposed by many
people living in Texas along the effected communities.
