They say that Shafter, 36 miles south of Marfa, is a ghost town, well yes, partly. I found people living it. Shafter used to be a big silver mining town. Resident Marion Hughes, says it's still mined for silver. It was the site of an old fort as well. Texas Rangers became famous in this town for hunting down ruthless criminals. There was a famous gun fight here in the 40's. Shafter is quiet and beautiful. A pleasant creek, lined with poplar trees, runs through it.
